I am a pediatric nurse who quit her job at The Children’s Hospital Colorado to explore life in another country. Selling or giving away all that I own I have ventured south of the border to Cuenca, Ecuador with my dog Barkley. Here are the stories of my life change.

Life in the day

And The Winner is…Cuenca!

You may be wondering: “Of all the cities in all the world, why Cuenca?” Honestly, that is a very good question. I did a good deal of research and presently Cuenca is largely written about as one of the finest places to retire to outside of the US. That being said, there is a good deal of information on the Latin American city.

One such writer described Cuenca this way: “Flowers bloom everywhere, and not one but four rushing rivers bubble over rocks to feed the lush vegetation.  In Ecuador, nature is ever-present.  And you can enjoy it fully in the city of Cuenca, where those rivers trail amid mountain surrounds.”

I also came across a Canadian family of three via this youtube video:

I began to follow the blog of this family, the Hains family on gringosabroad.com and gathered a great deal of information…all the good, bad, and ugly.

So, Cuenca, even though I have never been there, ha-ha, seems to be just the city that I am drawn to. Cuenca was established by explorers from Cuenca, Spain. So, the architecture is similar to that of Spain…which I love.

Okay, I know just what you are thinking. “Really, Vicki! You actually sold everything you own, quit your job, shipped your dog Barkley and arrived in a city that you had never been to with only 3 suitcases! You are absolutely CRAZY!” To which I would have to reply, “you are right!” But, I am an adrenaline junkie. This is an adventure that I will take you all on. Who knows what I will experience but it will be just that… an experience!
