I am a pediatric nurse who quit her job at The Children’s Hospital Colorado to explore life in another country. Selling or giving away all that I own I have ventured south of the border to Cuenca, Ecuador with my dog Barkley. Here are the stories of my life change.

The Road is Rocky To Start

The road to Los Angeles from Colorado is long. 17 hours for me. That’s when this trip started. In a car with Barkley in the back seat. We arrived on a Monday into LA. We started in California because my brother insisted that he be the one to send me off at LAX. So, in California we stayed visiting friends and family to receive hugs and good byes. Then on Monday July 27, 2015 my brother and I placed Barkley in her crate and drove her to the United Airlines Cargo building at LAX. The paperwork was completed at 5:30 and she was sent on the belt into who knows where. My heart in my throat we then headed for my flight.

After a long flight I arrived into Quito Airport at 11 PM. Barkley was to stay in the cargo holding area until I could get her in the morning once they opened at 8:00. I checked into the Quito Airport Suites Hotel which is a dog friendly hotel just 15 minutes from the airport. The staff is more than welcoming and friendly. There I met my first Ecuadorian friend Lucia who would kindly help me get Barkley out of jail the next morning.

The hotel lives in a sleepy suburb called Tababela. The hotel is perfect and comfortable. I will write more on the hotel in another blog post. My stay here has been peaceful and relaxing.

The day to follow getting Barkley out of jail was very long and frustrating. Welcome to the bureaucracy of a third world country. If I had not had the assistance of my new friend Lucia there is no way Barkley would be free today sitting by my side. I will write the details of that day in a post regarding getting your dog into Ecuador.

My new life has started and I am happy. The people of Ecuador are kind and friendly…even in the bureaucratic end. You must just go with the slow pace and expect that things will take a bit. But for now things are good.
