I am a pediatric nurse who quit her job at The Children’s Hospital Colorado to explore life in another country. Selling or giving away all that I own I have ventured south of the border to Cuenca, Ecuador with my dog Barkley. Here are the stories of my life change.

Life in the day

Why Vicki, Why!!

So, you are wondering just why I have made the big decision to leave Children’s Hospital Colorado, leave Denver and leave America!!! It all started once I returned from the medical mission trip that I was a part of in January, 20015. A team from the Children’s hospital went to Guatemala for a surgical mission which I was very fortunate to be a part of. You can read about the amazing adventure beginning with Guatemala Day 1 post. (once I place that on my blog!)

Over the past few years I had become frustrated with the huge influx of people moving to Denver (I hear you! It’s the marajuana!!!!) Denver is not ready for such a surge of residents. Everywhere you drive there is constant road construction and TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC!!!! The days of the “small city” with quick access to nature and the Rocky Mountains is gone.IMG_0411

With Obama Care things at the hospital had been changing, too. A large number of the benifits and cutbacks had been happening over the past two years. We all understood that these cutbacks needed to happen however, to me the feeling of being a nurse had changed. It once felt as the hospital was all about helping children and their families but now felt it like the dollar was the bottom line.

When I returned from the Guatemala trip everything had changed in my mind and heart. The hour plus commute to and from work became more than unbearable. “What am I doing? This is not how I want to live my life!”IMG_0328

I┬áremembered how the kind and loving people of Guatemala were happy living simply. I realized that I needed to find a simpler way of life. One without a car!!! I wanted to ride my bike, walk or take the bus. Forget about commuting and all the traffic. Please, no more snow…except when I choose to go find some.

The research then began. Where can I go? Where is the life simple? Where is the cost of living less? Some place with beautiful architecture. Some place with good weather. Some place with simple and kind people. I want to learn another language and experiance another culture. My research lead me to Cuenca, Ecuador. More on Cuenca in another post.
